10 Things Driving Test Examiners Check That Most Learners Miss
Failing the driving test often isn't about the obvious things. Most learners know to check mirrors, signal in good time, and stop at red lights. The faults that cause test failures are usually subtler — and they're all preventable with the right preparation.
1. Effective Observation at Junctions
"Effective" means actually looking and acting on what you see — not just moving your head. Examiners watch for genuine head movements and appropriate responses to emerging hazards at junctions.
2. Moving Off Safely
Every time you pull away from the kerb — whether from traffic lights, a junction, or after a manoeuvre — you must check the mirrors and blind spot. Many learners forget this after completing parallel parking.
3. Steering Control
Steer smoothly and progressively. Erratic steering or letting the wheel spin back through your hands are both noted. Feed the wheel through, especially on roundabouts.
4. Use of Speed
The examiner is checking that you drive at an appropriate speed for the conditions — not just the limit. Driving significantly below the limit on clear roads is a fault.
5. Following Distance
Two seconds minimum in normal conditions. Examiners watch for tailgating, particularly on dual carriageways and in queues.
6. Responding to Traffic Signs
Signs you must stop for include Give Way, Stop, and No Entry. Many learners recognise these but act too late. Practice until your responses are immediate.
7. Positioning on the Road
Keep left except when overtaking or turning right. Poor lane discipline on roundabouts is one of the most common serious faults in the Leicester test area.
8. Making Progress
Don't hesitate at junctions when it's clearly safe to go. Excessive hesitation (called undue hesitation) is a serious fault that can fail your test on its own.
9. Responding to Pedestrians
Always be prepared to give way to pedestrians — especially at zebra crossings, exits from car parks, and when turning across their path.
10. The Independent Driving Section
For 20 minutes, you follow either sat-nav directions or road signs without prompting. Many learners get thrown when the sat-nav takes an unexpected route — stay calm and continue to follow instructions.
