8 Driving Tips Every New Driver Should Know

📅 May 6, 2026 ✍️ By rlodhiya

Good driving isn't just about passing the test — it's about the habits you build for life. Here are eight tips that the best drivers practise every time they get behind the wheel.

1. Use the MSM Routine at Every Hazard

Mirror – Signal – Manoeuvre. This sequence protects you and communicates your intentions to other road users. Apply it every time you change speed, direction, or lane.

2. Look Well Ahead

Your eyes should be scanning 12+ seconds ahead — not just at the car in front. This gives you time to respond to hazards gradually rather than sharply.

3. Adjust Your Speed for Conditions

The speed limit is a maximum, not a target. In rain, fog, or heavy traffic, appropriate speed is often significantly lower than the posted limit.

4. Keep a Safe Following Distance

The two-second rule: pick a fixed point ahead, watch the car in front pass it, then count "only a fool breaks the two-second rule." In rain, double it to four seconds.

5. Position Your Car Correctly

In normal conditions, keep left. When approaching a left bend, position towards the centre (not over it) to improve your view around the corner.

6. Smooth Is Fast

Smooth, progressive acceleration and braking is safer, more fuel-efficient, and more comfortable for passengers. Harsh inputs are a sign of late observation.

7. Plan Your Gear Changes (Manual Drivers)

Change down before, not during, a bend. Be in the right gear for the speed you're doing — not the speed you were just at.

8. Check Your Mirrors Every 8–12 Seconds

Keep an updated mental picture of what's behind and beside you. This is especially important before braking, overtaking, or opening your car door.
