Advanced Driving Skills: What to Learn After You Pass

📅 May 6, 2026 ✍️ By rlodhiya

Most new drivers emerge from the test system knowing how to operate a car safely — but not necessarily how to drive it well. The driving test measures a minimum standard, not an expert one. Here's what advanced driving can offer beyond the basics.

What Is Advanced Driving?

Advanced driving is the application of systematic technique to produce safe, smooth, and well-planned driving. It draws on frameworks used by police, emergency services, and IAM RoadSmart (Institute of Advanced Motorists).

Key principles include:

  • System of Vehicle Control — a structured approach to approaching any hazard
  • Commentary driving — verbalising what you see and intend to do, building awareness
  • Limit point analysis — reading bends and adjusting speed based on how far you can see safely

Skills to Develop After Passing

Eco-driving: Reading the road ahead to minimise braking and acceleration. A skilled eco-driver achieves significantly better fuel economy and is often safer because they're looking further ahead.

High-speed observation: Motorway and dual carriageway driving at 60–70 mph requires scanning far ahead and maintaining four-second following distances. This skill deteriorates without practice.

Night driving: Reduced visibility, dazzle from oncoming headlights, and different pedestrian behaviour all require adapted techniques.

Towing and manoeuvring with a trailer: A separate skill set not covered in the standard test.

Emergency braking: Understanding ABS-equipped braking and what to do if you need to stop suddenly.

Post-Pass Courses

Consider the Pass Plus scheme (a structured 6-hour course) or an IAM RoadSmart course for a comprehensive post-pass development programme.
