Your First Driving Lesson: A Complete Beginner's Guide
Booking your first driving lesson is exciting — and maybe a little nerve-wracking. The good news is that your first lesson is not a test. It's the very beginning of a structured journey. Here's what to expect.
Before the Lesson: What to Bring
- Your provisional driving licence (required by law)
- Comfortable, flat-soled shoes (avoid flipflops, heels, or thick-soled boots)
- Your glasses or contact lenses if you need them to drive
You don't need to bring anything else. Tea and confidence optional.
The Cockpit Drill
Every driver — every time they get in a new vehicle — should perform the cockpit drill. Your instructor will walk you through:
- S — Seat: position for comfort and reach
- S — Steering: adjusted for posture
- M — Mirrors: interior, driver's exterior, passenger's exterior
- G — Gearstick: familiarisation with gear positions (or Drive/Neutral for automatic)
- S — Seatbelt: all occupants belted
Moving Off and Stopping
In your first lesson, the main focus is usually:
- Moving off from the kerb safely
- Driving in a straight line
- Smooth braking and stopping
- Basic mirror checking
In an automatic, you'll find these come quickly — there's no clutch to manage.
What Won't Happen in Lesson One
You won't go on dual carriageways, attempt roundabouts, or parallel park. First lessons are deliberately kept simple. Calm, controlled movement in a quiet area is the entire goal.
How Long Is a Lesson?
Standard lessons are 1 or 2 hours. For your first lesson, 1 hour is usually plenty — it's a lot to absorb.
After the Lesson
Your instructor will give you a debrief — what went well, what to work on, and what to expect next time. Ask all your questions here.
