Your First Time on the Motorway: A Step-by-Step Guide
Since 2018, learner drivers in England, Scotland, and Wales have been permitted to drive on motorways with an approved driving instructor in a dual-controlled car. This is excellent news — motorway experience before your test means you're better prepared for real-world driving.
The Key Differences on a Motorway
Speed: The national speed limit is 70 mph, but appropriate speed depends on conditions. In heavy rain or fog, 50–60 mph may be the right call.
Lane discipline: Keep left unless overtaking. Return to the left lane as soon as it's safe after overtaking. Middle-lane hogging is a fixed penalty offence.
Following distance: The two-second rule becomes the four-second rule at motorway speeds in good conditions — more in rain or poor visibility.
Joining the Motorway
The slip road is your acceleration lane. Use it fully to match the speed of traffic on the left lane before merging. Check your mirrors and right blind spot, then merge smoothly. Don't stop at the end of a slip road unless traffic is stationary.
Motorway Overtaking
Before moving to the right:
- Check your centre mirror
- Check your right mirror
- Check your right blind spot
- Signal right
- Accelerate and move across smoothly
- Once clear, signal left, check left mirror and blind spot, return to the left lane
Spotting Hazards Early
At 70 mph you cover 31 metres per second. Your observation needs to be scanning far ahead — a minimum of 12 seconds of forward visibility is recommended. Watch for brake lights well ahead and begin reducing speed early.
Variable Speed Limits and Smart Motorways
Smart motorways use overhead gantries to display variable speed limits. These are legally enforceable — treat them the same as any other speed limit sign.
